Which IQ Battery 5P is this?

Check the order code and configured rating on the quote and nameplate. The original IQBATTERY-5P-1P-INT uses IQ8D-BAT battery microinverters. The separately documented IQ Battery 5P with FlexPhase is IQBATTERY-5P-3P-INT, with IQ8T-BAT microinverters and selectable single- and three-phase ratings. Do not mix their specifications or layouts. Documentation dates alone do not establish that either version has been withdrawn.

What can stay in an existing solar system?

Existing panels and PV inverters may stay in the documented grid-connected routes below. “AC-coupled” does not mean every system is compatible: the installer must check the exact equipment, firmware, metering, phase and approvals. The battery's microinverters serve the battery, not the roof panels.

Production and consumption CTs measure different flows. A quote should say which are already present and which will be added. Enphase's Great Britain guide says a Gateway Metered ships with two CTs for a basic arrangement and identifies additional CTs for three-phase systems; the exact count and placement must be designed for the site. The same guide lists four original 5P units per 80 A circuit and up to twelve across three phases, subject to local sizing rules. This is a documented design ceiling, not a promise that output or approval scales without limit. Ask for the approved system and connection limits rather than multiplying one unit's rating by a proposed count.

What changes if you need backup?

Backup is a separate design and cost choice. The original 5P UK sheet identifies IQ System Controller 3 INT (SC100G-M230-3P) for backup, while Communications Kit 2 is identified for normal grid-tied operation. The Gateway and System Controller are different components. Ask whether the quote covers self-consumption only, selected backup circuits or another documented arrangement, and identify every additional controller, protection, metering, commissioning and approval line.

Grid-connected compatibility with a third-party PV inverter does not mean it keeps producing during a power cut. Enphase's separate European technical brief makes off-grid PV operation conditional on controller integration, the PV-to-battery power relationship and installer configuration; a string inverter may be shed. Treat any outage-solar claim as an item for a UK installer to document for your exact equipment. The Battery Payback calculator does not assign a monetary value to backup or outage operation.

What belongs in the full quote?

Ask for the full additional installed price compared with keeping your existing solar. This is not a verified current price range or “from” offer.

1. Battery and controls: exact 5P order code, unit count, usable capacity, IQ Gateway Metered, production/consumption CTs, Communications Kit 2 and control cable.
2. Required site work: protection, board, phase, meter or network changes, separate mounting hardware, labour, commissioning and DNO or other acceptance work.
3. Optional extras: backup System Controller and associated work, plus other optional upgrades.
4. Ongoing costs: monitoring, connectivity, service or subscriptions, and who bills them.

Ask the installer to mark each item “included”, “already present”, “required extra”, “optional” or “unknown” and total the compulsory upfront addition. Keep the old PV system's sunk cost out of this comparison. An unknown running fee is not zero.

What does the UK warranty cover?

The UK-index document for systems activated on or after 15 September 2025 covers England, Scotland and Wales. Request the applicable document for Northern Ireland or an earlier activation window. Original 5P and FlexPhase are listed separately.

The original 5P term ends at the earlier of 15 years from Activation Date or 6,000 discharged cycles. While cover remains in force and use conditions are met, the capacity promise is at least 70% of nameplate at the end of year 10 and 60% at the end of year 15—not a lifetime or financial-return guarantee.

Activation Date is the earlier of Enphase registration or Installer Portal activation. Activation after the marked “Energize by” date is excluded. Ask for the serial number, activation window and registration evidence.

Cover requires authorised sale, appropriate installation and use, permission to operate where required, and continuous internet except for interruptions outside the owner's reasonable control. Preventable defects linked to missed available firmware can be excluded.

Enphase may repair, replace or offer a proportionate set-off/refund at its discretion. The terms exclude removal, installation and troubleshooting costs for the owner's electrical system and set RMA return duties and possible charges. Transfer at the original site requires a form and fee within 30 days.

The original-5P schedule on pages 5–6 gives the IQ Gateway, Consumption CT and Communications Kit a shorter period than the battery. Confirm labour, shipping, claims, separate installer workmanship cover and the seller's handling of statutory rights.

App, internet and ongoing services

Monitoring uses the Enphase App and Installer Platform; the Gateway communicates with the battery through Communications Kit 2, with remote software/firmware updates documented. The Great Britain guide requires Wi-Fi or Ethernet as the primary connection. Check enabled functions, connection provision and what happens when it is unavailable; warranty connectivity conditions are above.

Enphase's general Terms of Service allow web services, including the App, to change or end. They are not a UK 5P fee schedule or hardware warranty. No current UK subscription price or perpetual free-service commitment was verified. Get app, cloud, connectivity, remote-control and support fees, update responsibilities and change terms in writing. Unquoted does not mean £0.

Which numbers belong in the calculator?

Use first-year AC energy delivered from the battery to home loads instead of grid purchases, in kWh/year—not the 5.0 kWh capacity, 3.2 kVA apparent output rating or a warranty cycle limit. Capacity × 365 is not a forecast. Solar surplus, demand timing, power, controls and losses determine usable annual delivery.

Enter the full additional installed cost, separate annual extra costs and three explicit Lower/Central/Higher energy assumptions in the Battery Payback calculator. Avoided variable purchases are offset by net export income forgone. Whole-system AC efficiency must connect otherwise-exported AC solar to home-delivered AC energy, including relevant conversion and auxiliary losses. The 90% battery-path test is not automatically that input. Annual import and surplus checks are only upper bounds, not timing checks; see how the calculations work.

Grid charging, dynamic tariff control, backup and grid-service income are outside this model. The warranty field does not set life, horizon or annual decline. No recovery or a missed return target is a valid result; keeping solar without a battery remains an option.

Questions to take to an installer

Take these to any installer you choose; Battery Payback does not collect the answers.

1. What exact battery order code and configured rating appear on the written quote and nameplate: original IQBATTERY-5P-1P-INT or another 5P version? How many units, on which phase arrangement?
2. What make, model and generation is my current PV inverter or Enphase microinverter system? Which PV equipment stays, and does the proposed grid-tied arrangement match Enphase's documented path?
3. Which IQ Gateway Metered, production/consumption CTs, Communications Kit 2 and control cable are already suitable, and which are mandatory new line items? Is any separate Gateway needed for legacy PV?
4. Does the price include only grid-connected self-consumption, or backup too? If backup is included, list the System Controller and every extra part, protected load and outage-PV assumption separately.
5. What is the complete additional installed total with compulsory work, commissioning and approvals, and what is optional? What recurring app, connection, service or maintenance costs are payable?
6. What first-year AC kWh delivered to home loads instead of grid purchases is assumed, using my own PV export and demand information? Where are input/output measured, what whole-system loss boundary applies, and how sensitive is the result to lower use or export income?
7. Which warranty revision and activation window apply in my location, and who records energize-by, registration, internet connectivity, software updates, claims and installation-work responsibility?
